Welcome to Year 6
We hope you have had a great summer and your children are ready to take the next step forward in their education.
We are really looking forward to getting to know you whilst exploring our new and exciting topics. Our first topic in September is: What do I need to survive? This will take us on an adventure in so many ways, so we hope you are equipped for what you may encounter! But don’t worry, we’ll be here to support you every step of the way. J
Let’s have a great year and one to remember!
Please see below information about the homework expectations this year.
Daily Reading - Due to Covid, we will be creating class libraries for reading books. Children will be allowed to choose and take home a book from their class library for home reading. We encourage children to read 4 times a week for 15 minutes. Younger children will need to spend more time reading aloud whilst older or more confident readers may spend some of this time reading independently. Parents are expected to sign the reading record to show their child has read.
Alongside reading books, children will have access to online reading activities and games on our new learning platform being launched in the next few weeks. As part of our catch-up curriculum, weekly reading tasks will be set for your child to complete at home. There will be an expectation to complete these tasks, and time in school will be made available for children who have limited access to technology.
Spelling – Over the course of the next week a spelling overview will be stuck in your child’s homework diary. On this sheet will be the spellings for at least the next 8 weeks. These will be dated so you know exactly which spellings the children will be learning week on week, instead of the words being stuck in weekly. This gives you the opportunity to see which words are coming up so if you feel your child will benefit from some prior learning you can introduce them earlier on.
The children will be marking their own spellings after they have been tested. They will then highlight the spellings they got right on their overview so you know which words your child got right and the ones they still need to practise. We look forward to seeing the children continue to improve their spelling, which is a key part of their English learning.
Maths – As with the reading and as part of our catch-up curriculum, an online learning platform will be used to set weekly homework tasks. Again there is an expectation that this homework will be completed. Shortly, you will receive details for how to log in to the online platforms.
For the first half term, children will be asked to wear their PE kits to school on the day they have PE. It is expected that the children will be in full PE kit (burgundy t-shirt and black shorts). They may wear black or grey joggers and a black or grey sweatshirt or their school jumper over their PE kit if it is cold.
Year 6 will be having PE on the following days:
Turquoise - Monday
Jade – Monday
Amethyst – Tuesday
If you have any other queries or concerns about your child please do get in touch.
