Welcome to Year 6

Thursday 2nd September 2021

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to Year 6

We hope you have had a great summer and your children are ready to take the next step forward in their education.

We are really looking forward to getting back into the swing of school life whilst exploring our new and exciting topics. Our first topic in September is: What do we need to survive? This will take us on an adventure in so many ways, so we hope you are equipped for what you may encounter! But don’t worry, we’ll be here to support you every step of the way. J

Let’s have a great year and one to remember!

Current Home Learning Expectations

Please see below information about the homework expectations this year.

Daily Reading - Due to Covid, we will be creating class libraries for reading books. Children will be allowed to choose and take home a book from their class library for home reading. We encourage children to read 3 times a week for 15 minutes. Some of you will need to spend more time reading aloud whilst others or more confident readers may spend some of this time reading independently. Parents are expected to sign the home school diary record to show their child has read.  This year we expect that school diaries are in school every day and taken home each evening- we will be monitoring this as good practice for secondary school.

Alongside reading books, children will have access to online reading activities and games on our new learning platform called Reading Eggs. As part of our catch-up curriculum, reading tasks will be set for your child to explore at home. There is an expectation that children do log on to complete learning on this site and time in school will be made available for children who have limited access to technology. Login details will be re-issued to the children in the first few weeks of school.

Spelling – Daily spelling is taught discreetly in our classes. In these spelling sessions, children will learn spelling patterns to help them learn new words. Children will have a copy of their weekly spellings for the term in their reading record. Children are tested on their word lists each week; words that they have spelt correctly are highlighted in their reading records. For the first 3 weeks of term we will be refreshing our memory of the year 5/6 expected spelling list. After this, we will return to the normal spelling grid that you are familiar with.

Maths – As with the reading and as part of our catch-up curriculum, an online learning platform called My Maths will be used to set learning tasks. Again, there is an expectation that children do log on to complete learning. Login details will be re-issued to the children in the first few weeks of school.

PE

Year 6 will be having PE on the following days:   Tuesday and Wednesday

PE Kit

It is expected that the children will be in full PE kit (burgundy t-shirt and black shorts). They may wear black or grey joggers and a black or grey sweatshirt or their school jumper over their PE kit if it is cold.

As we know, during changing times, school uniform and PE Kit is easily misplaced so please can we request that all clothing items are clearly labelled with your child’s name.

PGL

We are really excited for our PGL trip this year, only six weeks to go! In coming weeks more information will be given regarding this trip.

If you have any other queries or concerns about your child please do get in touch.

Best wishes

Year 6 Team
