Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development
Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development (SMSC)
At Park View, our vision and values are at the heart of everything we do. They underpin our teaching and learning, shape our school culture and help us prepare our children to become confident, responsible and compassionate citizens.
We are committed to providing a broad, balanced and inspiring curriculum that promotes pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Through rich learning experiences and meaningful opportunities both within and beyond the classroom, we prepare children for the opportunities, challenges and responsibilities of life in modern Britain.
To help our school community develop a shared understanding of SMSC, we use the following child-friendly definitions:
Spiritual Development
Exploring the mysteries of life and the moments of awe and wonder that help us understand ourselves and the world around us.
Moral Development
Learning to recognise the difference between right and wrong, and understanding the impact of our choices and actions.
Social Development
Developing the skills, attitudes and understanding needed to build positive relationships and work well with others.
Cultural Development
Appreciating the experiences, traditions, beliefs and values that shape our communities and wider society.
How Do We Develop SMSC at Park View?
We recognise that SMSC development is not confined to one subject or lesson. Instead, it is woven throughout daily life at Park View and embedded across every aspect of school life.
Children develop their SMSC understanding through:
- Assemblies that promote, explore and celebrate a range of values and themes.
- A positive behaviour culture that recognises and celebrates children's achievements and contributions.
- A broad and enriching curriculum, including Religious Education, PSHE and personal development opportunities.
- Fundraising activities and community projects that encourage children to make a positive difference.
- Democratic opportunities, where children vote for representatives and take on leadership roles such as Pupil Governors and Sports Captains.
- Educational visits and visitors that broaden children's experiences and understanding of the wider world.
- Support from our ELSA and Family Support Worker, helping children develop resilience, wellbeing and positive relationships.
- Our weekly whole-school debate question, encouraging thoughtful discussion and respectful consideration of different viewpoints.
- Opportunities for pupil voice, discussion and debate throughout the curriculum.
- Theme days and enrichment events that celebrate diversity, culture and learning.
- The Park View Learner Award, which recognises and promotes the qualities and values we want all children to develop.
Through these experiences, we aim to nurture children who are curious, respectful and reflective, with the confidence to make a positive contribution to their communities and the wider world. As a school Rooted in Care, Rising with Purpose, we believe that SMSC development is fundamental to helping every child flourish.
