Supporting Your Child’s Journey Towards Independent Travel
As your child moves through Year 5 and Year 6, they begin to develop greater independence in many areas of their lives. One important step is learning how to travel safely and confidently.
The Road Safety Team has shared a helpful newsletter designed to support families as pupils prepare for this transition. By the time children move to Year 7, most will be travelling to and from school independently. For many, this may be their first regular journey without an adult, so it is important that they are equipped to make safe and responsible choices.
We encourage you to read and share this guidance at home. It includes practical suggestions to help your child take gradual steps towards independence, such as:
- Practising short journeys together during Year 6
- Becoming familiar with routes and road safety expectations
- Building confidence ahead of starting secondary school
We hope you find this resource helpful in supporting your child’s next steps.

Rail Safety Awareness – Information for Parents and Carers
Our school has recently achieved Silver Rail Safe Friendly Certification, which recognises our commitment to promoting vital rail safety awareness with our pupils.
As part of this work, we have a Rail Safety Postcard. The messages it contains highlight important safety information about railways that may not always be widely known. By taking a moment to read and discuss this together, you can help reinforce key safety messages and support us in keeping children safe around railways.
