British Sign Language (BSL)

At Park View, we believe that every child benefits from learning British Sign Language (BSL). Not only does it give children the skills to communicate with all members of our school community, but it also helps them develop empathy, understanding and a lifelong commitment to inclusion.

BSL is woven into everyday life at Park View. To support this, we have identified our 30 Key Signs, which are introduced and practised across the school. These signs have been carefully chosen because they support everyday communication with our children and staff.

Children learn five new key signs each half term, building their confidence and fluency over time. In addition, pupils in Key Stage 2 receive dedicated BSL lessons, where they develop a wider vocabulary and a deeper understanding of Deaf culture and communication.

By embedding BSL throughout our school, we are helping to create a community where everyone feels valued, understood and able to belong.
